Linda Edna Cardellini was born in Redwood City, California, to Lorraine (Hernan) and Wayne David Cardellini an entrepreneur. Her parents are of Italian (from her paternal grandpa), Irish (from her mother), German, English as well as Scottish origins. She was trained at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama and started her career with the British TV show Just William (2010). Cinderella was her breakthrough performance following her appearance playing the character Lady Rose MacClare, in Downton Abbey's period drama (2012-2015). James went onto portray the role of Countess Natasha Rostova, in the television version of War & Peace, in 2016 and starred several films. This includes the action movie Baby Driver (2017) and the period dramas Darkest Hour (2017) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018 and 2021) as well as the musicals Mamma Mia! We Go Back Again (2018) as well as Yesterday (2019). The portrayal she gave of Pamela Anderson for the biographical show Pam & Tommy in 2022 earned her Golden Globes and Primetime Emmy Awards.
