Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford started to become interested in acting at the age of teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a few weeks, she realized it was not suitable for her. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in the year 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy and has been added to her repertoire in 1996.
